The effects of coastal erosion are well known to Haumoana, Te Awanga and Clifton residents whose beachfront properties experienced extensive damage during last year’s (2007) April storm events.
The Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has been studying the extent of coastal erosion along the coast, including Haumoana, Te Awanga and Clifton to update records.
The coastal area from Clifton to the Tukituki River mouth is undergoing continuous erosion. The rate of erosion is significant; the average loss of beach material for this section of the coast removed each year is equivalent to between ten and 12 standard car trailer loads for each metre of beach.
As well as identifying the hazard zone, the study will also identify options for managing the hazard. These may include:
- Set back zones for new subdivision and development
- Relocation of threatened buildings, structures and services
- Control of access onto the beach
- Allowing only relocatable houses and structures in certain areas
- Restoration of beaches and dunes
- Coastal protection works
